As the midwest digs out from all the snow, please remember to clear the area around your fire hydrants. Your local firefighters will be very appreciative.
Made it in to work today, most of the roads were quite good, except for Wolf Road in Wheeling, Illinois. Let's just say it wasn't a fun drive......

Dang, as a Californian I'd never thought of the hydrants..... do they ever freeze? Oh man, weather sure complicates your life!
Eva, that's the first thing I did after shoveling a path to the street! I think my neighbors thought I was crazy! This summer Den and I were up at our family cottage in the North Woods. We were driving around in the "boonies" when we saw this big black cloud in the sky rising. We drove over, it was so very sad to see, a ladies house was burning down and the fire Dept had to truck water in. She lost everything including one of her dogs in a half hour. Iwill never forget it. So, fires have been etched in my mind, to loose everything is a tradagy . So, let the neighbors think I am crazy!!! Debbie

Sad news The hydrants in this area are diffrent then the ones in you area. They are Dry barrels hydrants. This means there is a valve below the frost line and the pipe going up to the hydrant has no water in it. So if you hit the hydrant with your car it does not spray water every were like in the movies. Just ask my sister Kristin about that one.
That is a good reminder. We are on well & septic here, so we don't have one...but if we did, I would not have thought of that!
